Audacious Radio 24th Feb 2011 – featuring Paul, Sophia and Deanna

It started last week when I saw Sting at the Apollo in Manchester. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra were accompanying him and from the very first note to the last ripple of applause the atmosphere was electric. Throughout his performance Sting said one thing that has changed the way I think about song writing and its process. He said,
“I write the music first because then the music already has an identity.”
I will be the first to admit my musical skills are not the best, I play basic piano and always felt it has held me back somewhat because I too like to think that music gives the song its feel. This time I was determined that my lack of piano skills were not going to let me down. With Sting’s comments in mind after putting the basics together (riff and chords) I invited two friends who play strings to a song writing session. I already had a strong idea of the verse and chorus melody and whilst lyrics were on the sparse side the songs concept was taking some shape. As my friends and I played with a few nervous looks exchanged at the beginning the song took on a new depth. From that one session I wrote a bridge and we put together a pretty mean instrumental too. Goosebumps!!! But none of this would have happened had I not recognized my weakness and did something about it. Sometimes you hit a brick wall, with me usually its my lack of musical knowledge, but from now on why not just ask a trusted friend or in my case try something you never tried before with instrumentation to uncover the song that God has already penned in heaven for you to discover.
Keep pushing through, an obstacle is also an opportunity!
