FRUSTRATION!
Recently I have found myself a little exasperated with song writing. I have had many ideas (lines here and melodies there) but piecing them together in any kind of order is proving difficult. Before, when I have written songs they have come quite easily but recently it seems like a bit of a fight. This is where I become a song crafter rather than a song writer. I have by no means mastered song crafting but here are some tips that you may find helpful if you too find yourself frustrated;
1. Let the song marinade.
I am impatient when things take longer than they should. Getting food ready, packing, getting insurance…you name it, I want it done well in the shortest time possible. However, this is not necessarily the case with some songs. Your song may need to marinade for a while. Marinade your song ideas with the presence of God, Word of God, general time and thought. This way you’ll write a song that captures the weight of what God is doing in and through you. I don’t want to write Jesus jingles, I want to write love songs where His heart collides with mine and deep adoration and praise overflows. I understand now that this will take time and so a few ideas even now are marinating.
2. Be patient.
How long do you marinade the song for? The answer; until you’re ready. Sometimes songs don’t flow because God has not quite finished the work that needs to take place in you for the song to be written. So maybe do some heart work with God and allow him to do what he needs to do in you before you try and sing about it.
3. Be diligent.
Don’t forget about the song. Just because you couldn’t quite get a handle on it now does not mean it hasn’t got potential. Check to see how its marinating every now and then, try it with new ideas just to test if its ready or not.
I hope these tips help any of us who are little frayed at the edges with song ideas that never quite manage to develop.
